Ek Omkar, also sometime pronounced as Ek Onkar is the most sacred symbol of Sikh religion, and a precious gift to whole humankind by the founder of Sikhism Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
First word "EK" stands for 1, means One or Single, and second word "Omkar" stands for God/ also said as "Akal Purkh" in Sikh's language OR an invisible true power who is the source of existence of whole universe, the power which is beyond any time limits, which is free from the life cycle of birth and death.

Sikhism and Hindu Religion are two sides of the same coin. Later, under guidance of subsequent Gurus, there were time to time major changes, which were important and changes were the need of the time.
In today's time, Sikhs and Hindus live like brothers in all parts of world and respect each other religion and believes. If looked carefully, Ek Omkar is also a unique combination of two religions. OM, first and most sacred symbol of Hinduism is a there in symbol "Ek OMkar".
Ek Omkar when chanted with closed eyes will take you in your inner peace same as Om.
Tattooing being a permanent change in the body is not at all recommended in Sikh Religion.
So regardless you are follower of Sikh religion or not, you should consider before getting EK-Onkar Tattoo as it will be permanent change (Though tattoo removal facilities are easily available now with much affordable price)

Origin of Ek Omkar:
At the time of Guru Nanak Dev (1469 to 1539), India'n society was full of misbelieves and status. "Ek Omkar" was the need of the time to make people understand that they all belong to same creator, so should live with peace with brotherhood.Sikhism and Hindu Religion are two sides of the same coin. Later, under guidance of subsequent Gurus, there were time to time major changes, which were important and changes were the need of the time.

First thing come first : Tattooing is not encouraged in Sikh Religion. As per guidance from Sikh Gurus, one who believe in Sikhism should not go for any kind of Body Modification. Removing hairs from any part of body is also prohibited as it is again a form of body modification. Reason is very clear and simple : As human consider the body as a gift of God, and believe in existence of God within, so they should not make any change in any part, and keep the body neat and clean like a temple or a gift. |
